Working Meeting on the ‘Industrial Karelia’ Project in Pitkyaranta
The meeting of partners and participants of the ‘Industrial Karelia: Past and Present’ project, supported by the Presidential Grants Fund, took place on August 30 in Pitkyaranta. The aim of the project is to preserve the mining and industrial heritage and historical memory of the Republic of Karelia in order to nurture a sense of patriotism among the inhabitants of the region and to boost territorial development. Target districts of the project are Pitkyarantsky, Pryazhinsky and Suoyarvsky Districts. The meeting was held at Pitkyarantsky District Administration, the official partner of the project.
During the meeting the planned activities were discussed, above all, the area beautification of the territories near mining-industrial objects, namely Black Polyana (Masuuni), the Herbertz-1 ore field, the Ristioya factory, Cape Ristiniemi and Red Glinka. In addition, the partners are preparing materials for local history readings and classes for schoolchildren, as well as collecting information for placards and for the book on the industrial history of target districts.
In addition, the project team, together with representatives of the Local Historical Club ‘Obereg’, inspected the territories scheduled for area beautification and the installation of information stands.
Overall, the project will host many activities on the territory of the Pitkyarantsky district such as quizzes on industrial history, tours to mining-industrial facilities, and an exhibition of publications on industrial history that will be presented in the Pitkyarantsky District Central Library.
