Expedition to Suojärvi
On 12 June, an expedition to Suojärvi district took place within the framework of the project ‘Industrial Karelia: New Dimensions’.
The purpose of the expedition was to search for iron ore and building stone mine workings related to the activities of the Suojärvi iron smelting plant.
Project coordinator Ksenia Chumak, project expert Igor Borisov and our new partner Kirill Uyutnov, a photographer and geologist in one person, took part in the expedition. In Suojärvi the team was hosted by local historian and guide Elena Zhukevich. Ludmila Bakhareva and Alexander Yursha, representatives of Suojärvi Central Library and Historical and Local History Museum of Suojärvi district, joined the group.
⛏The journey began with a visit to the ruins of the Suojärvi iron-smelting plant. Then we searched for historical quarries. Most of them are located on the islands, their visit is planned for the next expedition. But we managed to find small ancient quarries in the city limits. Elena Zhukevich showed 2 quarries, where the work was suspended not so long ago, but which are of interest for tourists and can be used for educational purposes.
Besides, it was possible to collect interesting samples of marble, granite and gabbro-diabase to replenish the exposition of museums and educational work with schoolchildren.
We continue working on the project! All collected materials and information will be handed over to the Suojärvi Museum. In addition, a stand and navigation signs will soon be installed in Suojärvi near the Karatsalmi Ore Park.
There are many more interesting trips to Pudozhsky, Medvezhegorsky and Pitkäranta districts ahead Stay tuned!
Special thanks to Elena Zhukevich for the reception and hospitality
The project is realised with the use of a grant from the President of the Russian Federation, provided by the Presidential Grants Fund.
